Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

Did they beat the drums slowly
Did they play the fife lowly
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the last post and chorus
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

Green Fields of France, Eric Bogle

Being the son of a soldier, Memorial Day is always difficult for me. When I think of all the young men and women who have died in the service, I can only wonder if the day comes that we won’t have to bury our young in such numbers.

I love you, Dad.

    1. Greg, as the son of a soldier, having lived for years in Verdun amidst the World War I battlefields, this has been a part of my consciousness for decades. I remember riding the bus to high school in Verdun and passing cemetery after cemetery of graves – white crosses for the French and black for the Germans. And in those years, there were no few old men but there were so many elderly widows. The costs of war never seem to be paid in full.
